Book review

Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo | Book Review

Hello beautiful readers!

I bring to you another review. I read Six of Crows like a year or two ago, but didn’t continue with Crooked Kingdom. This year I decided to finish all the series I’d started and didn’t finish, so I reread Six of Crows and read Crooked Kingdom in October. I also decided to read these books because the filming of the tv show started a few months ago and I had to read the books before watching the show.

I will only tell you what Six of Crows is about because spoilers. In Six of Crows we follow Kaz Brekker, the worst criminal in Ketterdam, attempting to complete a dangerous heist. However, he needs help, so he assembles a crew with five completely different people from one another. They want to succeed, but they have to learn to work together before accomplishing the impossible.

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom were so fun and thrilling to read. I was always at the edge of my seat expecting and crossing my fingers that things worked out for the characters of these books. Sometimes things didn’t go as planned and those were the moments I wanted to enter the book and help them in any way I could lol.

I read the Grisha trilogy earlier this year and it was so good to be back in this world somehow. This book takes place in the same world as the trilogy, but Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom take place in a different city with entirely new characters. Although we get some appearances from characters of the trilogy that you wouldn’t know about unless you’ve read it. This duology can be read without the necessity to read the Shadow and Bone trilogy, but I recommend you do so you can get the references that are made throughout Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, but it is all up to you.

Anyway, like I said, the story was very intriguing to me and I came to love these characters so much. They have a very special place in my heart and I want to know more about what they will be up to next. Although I’m angry because of the death of certain character and I want to talk very seriously with Leigh Bardugo.

Kaz, Inej, Nina, Matthias, Jesper, and Wylan are so different from one another but they manage to work together and form an amazing team a long the way. Of course they were not best friends since day one, but they get to know each other, support each other, and disagree more often than not. They are not good people and you wouldn’t want to be on their bad side, but they go to great lengths to help those they care about. I don’t want to talk about them individually because I’ll start feeling kind of homesick, but I’m so proud of them. Not because of the atrocities they committed, but because they have come a very long way and they just want to survive in a city and world where no one is really safe.

I like Leigh’s writing and this fantasy world she created is one of my favorites. I fell in love with Ravka in the Shadow and Bone trilogy, but now I fell in love with Ketterdam too. I can’t wait to see what other story she’ll come up with in this same world that will have me falling in love with it. However, the narration from one series to another changes a lot. In this duology we get six different POVs, all in third person. And as you might be guessing the six POV’s are from Kaz, Inej, Nina, Matthias, Jesper and Wylan.

Although I enjoyed these books and fell in love with them, I still prefer the Shadow and Bone trilogy. It might be because in the trilogy we get more information about Grisha and how the magic and the world in general work whereas in Six of Crows we get to know how a city of merchants, gamblers and gangs work and I personally felt like we get just the necessary amount of information to understand Grishas. I just hope I’m making sense.

I can’t give five stars to Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom because they didn’t feel extraordinary to me. They are great books with amazing characters and intriguing plot twists, but they weren’t mind blowing. I still recommend these books and if you have read the Shadow and Bone trilogy, in Crooked Kingdom some characters from the trilogy make an appearance so look forward to that!
