Book review

Geekerella by Ashley Poston | Book Review

Hello lovely readers!

This is the second to last review of the books I read last year! I don’t really have anything more to say so, let’s get to the review!

I heard good things about this book, so I had some expectations. I’m happy to say that they were met.

This book is about Elle, who likes, breathes and lives for Starfield, a sci-fi tv show she grew up watching with her dad. When she sees about the cosplay contest for the new Starfield movie, she can’t not participate. The prize is an invitation to ExcelsiCon cosplay ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor that will play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. On the other hand, Damien used to attend that kind of events, until he became famous and now he will be playing Federal Prince Carmindor, making one of his dreams come true. But the fandom of Starfield is not being easy on him and he starts thinking of himself as a failure, until he meets a girl who makes him see otherwise.

Whenever I read books that talk about fandoms, there’s nothing that can go wrong with them. My whole life is about me fangirling over movies, tv shows and books. That’s why stories like this one, hit so close to home. Geekerella was no exception. And also, this is a modern retelling of Cinderella, so to me, it was a win-win situation.

Elle is a such fangirl. I could relate so much to her and I understood her love for the show and the feeling of not really fitting it and being scared of talking to someone else about what you love the most. There’s always the judgment and the weird glances just because you love something with so much passion it makes you forget about real life. However, Elle’s life was way much harder than mine, because like Cinderella, she lives with her stepmother and stepsisters who treat her like their maid.

Meanwhile, Damien is the teen actor almost everyone is talking about and has a lot of fans. One might think that he has it all. But the truth is completely different. I seriously don’t want to say much about his story, but he was so adorable and by chapter three I felt like I had to protect him from all the evil of the world.

Geekerella is told in Elle’s and Damien’s POV. I really like it when books are told like this because you get both sides of the story and know exactly how the characters are feeling and what they are going through. Like I said, because of how this book is told, my feelings for Damien grew a lot and I want him to be happy forever!

This was a great book. I’m so happy I could finally read it because it’s been in my TBR for so long. If you’re looking for a light, cute, funny book, this is right for you. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed and you will relate to the characters a lot.

Don’t you love it when you can relate so much to the characters in books? It’s the best thing ever, it helps me in feeling like I’m not alone.

Until the next post!

Happy reading 💙
