No more ratings | Discussion

Hello amazing friends!

A little disclaimer before we get to the good stuff. If you follow me on Twitter or Goodreads, you might have noticed I don’t rate books and this might not come as a surprise to you, but I think I never really gave an explanation for that, so here it is and I hope you enjoy it even when I’m sure this post is kind of a mess lol.

no more ratings

You know how a lot of people feel so attacked when you rate their favorite book with less than five stars? Well, I really think people that take a rating so personally should calm down. Reading is very subjective, what you like, I may not and what I like, you may not. That’s how life is and that’s the beauty of it. Seeing all these different opinions on the same book is so interesting. Or at least it is to me.

Now, rating books is not something that comes easily to me and honestly, the fact that a number can determine if a book is worth reading or not is kind of mind blowing, in my opinion. We give so much power to a single number to help us convey how much we liked or disliked a book. And not only do we rate books, we rate everything! Which I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing, but we let a number decide for us if something is worth it. And when it comes to reviews, the most important thing we all want to know is the rating.

So, I don’t know if you know of Lala from booksandlala on Youtube. She makes very good videos, there is one I like the most. In this video she made a little experiment, not giving ratings to the books she read for like a month. And I think I will start doing that as well, not rating books anymore. Like I said, in a review what we focus on the most is the rating, but how a book made us feel and think is important too. I really think we should give more importance to our thoughts towards a book than a number.

I have been rating books since forever, so this change will not be easy because once I finish a book, I try to categorize my feelings and thoughts into a number and sometimes that’s so difficult because the book might feel like a 5 star one, but also like a 4, but maybe giving it 4.5 stars doesn’t feel right either. Without ratings, I will only make sure to explain as best as I can my thoughts and feelings to you.

I’m not even sure I’m making total sense, so I will stop this post here. And announce that all the reviews from now on won’t have a rating. Unless I find this new no-rating thing to be more complicated than I thought, then I might go back to the way things have been since forever.

Anyway, in the comments tell me if you agree or disagree with me or any other thoughts or opinions you have about ratings.

Until the next post!

Happy reading 💙
