This is the first time I write a book review for an eARC. I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for authorizing me a copy of the ARC! I am very happy and excited to talk about this book and my thoughts!
Kingdom of the Wicked is the first book in a series written by Kerri Maniscalco, author of the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. Kingdom of the Wicked is a YA Fantasy which will be published on October 27, 2020. Yes, you’re right, on Tuesday!
Emilia and her twin sister Victoria are streghe – witches who live secretly among humans, avoiding notice and persecution. One night, Victoria misses dinner service at the family’s renowned Sicilian restaurant. Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twin…desecrated beyond belief. Devastated, Emilia sets out to discover who did this, and to seek vengeance at any cost—even if it means using dark magic that’s been long forbidden.
Then Emilia meets Wrath, the outlier among the seven demon brethren, always choosing duty over pleasure. He’s been tasked by his master with investigating a series of women’s murders on the island. When Emilia and Wrath’s fates collide, it’s clear this disturbing mystery will take a bewitching turn…
Oh my goodness this book was good. It was slow in the beginning and really not much happened for a while, but that’s understandable since this is the first book in a new series and the author is setting up the world and introducing us the characters. However when it nears the end, the action never ends, and it becomes difficult to put the book down. The plot twists were great although I saw some of the coming but I was still shook when they happened!
We get to know Emilia better since the book is told in her POV. What she had to go through was not easy and I when I got to the last chapter, I was so proud of how far she had come. She is not perfect, but she did her best and that’s what matters. I really can’t wait to see what she will face in the next book!
Then we have Wrath. I’m going to be completely honest, I fell for him, he has my heart and I don’t want it back lol. We don’t get to know him completely, there are still a thousand things about him to learn and I’m dying to know all of his secrets!
Of course there are more characters, like the other demon princes, but I don’t want to mention all of these characters one by one, I think it is better if you get to know them by yourself, but in my opinion, none of them felt flat. Sure, we get to see some of them more than others, but they were interesting and you’ll want to know more about them.
The world building was easy to understand, however, there are a lot of things yet to know about the creatures of this world and how everything works. I don’t want to say much about this because of spoilers, but I am intrigued by all the new information we will get in the second book.
Overall, Kingdom of the Wicked didn’t disappoint me, it was what I expected and maybe even more. Kerri Maniscalco really outdid herself and she is now very close to becoming one of my favorite authors. There’s no doubt this is one of my favorite books of the year!
If you have read the Stalking Jack the Ripper series, this book feels completely different from that series. I liked SJTR series, but this new one by Kerri, I have the feeling it will become one of my favorite book/series of all time! It is that good. If you have read SJTR or not, please give this book a try because it is so good and everyone needs to read it.
Some trigger warnings I can think of are grief, death, blood, sorcery, devilry and mutilation. Please, if you are triggered by some of these, read the book with caution.
Until the next post!
Happy reading 💙
