A Darker Shade of Magic is a story full of magic. The Antari are magicians that can travel between parallel Londons, Red, Gray, White and, a long time ago, Black as well. Kell is one of the last Antari in all the Londons. In one of his travels, things go terribly wrong and he ends up meeting Delilah Bard, a thief. They go into a dangerous adventure to save the Londons from magic never seen before. That was not the best summary ever, but the less you know about this book/series, the better.
This book was so good. At first, there’s not much going on since we get introduced to this world of four Londons, but it wasn’t boring at all. However once the action starts to make an appearance, it was hard to put the book down.
The world building was so good. The worlds of this story are very complex and how they work are very different, but Victoria Schwab has a way with words that it was very easy to understand and picture everything. It all felt very vividly to me.
This book is told in third person, which was great because we got to see what other characters were doing and so the story was more engaging, in my opinion.
We get introduced to a lot of characters. Of course I loved reading about Kell and Lila, but I wanted more of Rhy, he was a very cool and funny character, although we don’t see much of him in this first book.
Kell and Lila were amazing to read too. They got in trouble pretty easily so they were always in these action packed situations, but Lila’s carefree attitude made some of them funny or at least, it took a little bit off the tension because oh my poor heart. Seriously, I love magic, but after this, I’m kind of scared of it.
I liked the plot twists. I saw some of them coming, but the others I was left shook! The only thing I didn’t like as much was the final fights. In my opinion everything started to fall in place so nicely that I just can’t believe it ended that way, you know. It’s like this feeling you get that when something is going really well, something bad is about to happen. That’s how it felt to me.
Overall, this book is a great start to the series. There some loose ends in the end, but that’s understandable since there are two more books, thank goodness because I was kind of addicted to this world and characters.
I recommend this book to anyone! It was so good and so full of magic and just something you don’t want to miss, trust me!
Until the next post!
Happy reading 💙
