Book review

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas | Book Review

I love the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, I started reading the Throne of Glass series but didn’t finish it (hopefully someday soon), so when this book was announced I knew I had to read it and I was going to love it. I was right!

House of Earth and Blood is about Bryce who seems to be living the best life until her friends are murdered. When the culprit is behind bars and crimes are still happening, she gets involved in the investigation somehow. Hunt is an enslaved Fallen Angel whose only work is to kill his boss’s enemies. Hunt is offered his freedom in exchange of helping Bryce find who is responsible for all the havoc in the city. They discover a dark power that threatens the world, but they also find themselves catching feelings for each other.

This book was written in third person therefore there were different points of view. Which I love, because like I have said before, it helps to understand the story better.

The book is huge (800 pages) so you can expect the story to be slow paced at times, but once the action starts, it is impossible to put the book down. And even still, I found this world very interesting because there were fae, angels, werewolves, mermaids and lots and lots of magical creatures living and existing in the same world and the same city! However, I think the book could have been shorter, but I like it still.

Although, I have to confess, I was confused at the beginning because it felt to me like there was way too much information about the world that I wasn’t sure I truly understood what was happening in those first chapters.

I liked the mystery and suspense. I guessed who one of the bad guys were, but as the story went on I wasn’t sure I was right. What I didn’t guess at all was the rest of the plot twists. Every time something was revealed I was left shook to the core!

The characters were amazing. Bryce went through some hard things and she was trying her best every day. I truly admire her courage and her loyalty to those she truly cares about. She was so fierce! Then there was Hunt who is this super deadly Fallen Angel, but he too had some demons. Bryce and Hunt made such a good team it was impossible not to like them! I want to protect them from all the bad in the world. I want to see them happy.

The secondary characters like Lehaban, Ruhn, Declan and Flynn also stole my heart. Of course there are many more like Danika and the pack. Honestly, this book was full of characters that manage to steal my heart little by little.

I should warn you tho. Have some tissues by your side when reading it because damn it breaks your heart towards the end. My heart broke like a trillion times in trillion little pieces! Just thinking about it now, many months after I read it, I get teary-eyed. But don’t let heartbreak scare you, your suffering and tears will be worth it!

Like I said at the very top of this post. I have read the A Court of Thorns and Roses series and I loved it! I can’t be completely sure if Crescent City is better than ACOTAR since this is only the first book in the series, but honestly I will not be surprised if this turns out to be my new favorite series by Sarah J. Maas.

Trigger warnings I can think of for this particular book, murder, guns, blood, bombs, drug consumption, grief, depression, death.

I am looking forward to the next book because even though this first book doesn’t end in a cliffhanger, I need to know what is going on with my faves!

I highly recommend this book if you like fantasy, romance and mystery. Also if you like fae, werewolves, angels, vampires and much more!

Until the next post!

Happy reading 💙
