We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal | Book Review

When this book first came out, I saw some people talking about it and I was intrigued. I also got it in a book box so it was kind of a win-win situation. I started this book expecting nothing and it turned out to be one of my favorite books of 2020.

We Hunt the Flame is a fantasy book about Zafira who hunts in the Arz, a forest which darkness is growing everyday, to feed the people from her village, but she disguises herself as The Hunter. Nasir is the sultan’s assassin, as well as the Crown Prince. Zafira goes on a quest to retrieve an old object that can bring magic to the world again, while the sultan sends Nasir to the same quest, although Nasir’s orders are to get the magical object and kill The Hunter.

As always, feel free to read the synopsis on Goodreads for you to get more details about the book. However, when I read this, I didn’t know much about what the story was about and I recommend you do the same!

I have to be honest, although I loved this book, the beginning was very slow. We start with getting to know Zafira and Nasir and what their life is like before the quest begins. We are also introduced to the world and how everything works. Even when it was slow at first, I’m glad it was that way because I had a little bit of difficulty getting into the story and the writing style. However, once I got the hang of it, and these two characters embark in their quest, everything only gets better and better.

Although some plot twists I saw coming, the big, and important ones left me shook. I didn’t see them coming at all and I’m pretty sure if I could see myself back then while reading those revelations, I would have had my mouth open!

I liked the characters a lot! Zafira is such a brave girl. She knows that being a woman in her village is almost like being a disgrace, but she believes that being a woman shouldn’t be synonym of weakness and she wants to prove everyone wrong. Nasir, even though he is the Crown Prince and is also known as the Prince of Death, he has suffered a lot by his dad’s hand. I wanted to protect him so bad even when I know he is more than capable of taking care of himself. As for the other characters, they were great too and they added so much to the story, even the villain!

You have to be warned. You are going to suffer along the characters. Their quest is not easy and they face danger after danger and they were so precious to me I just wanted them to be successful but also to come out of it alive. One thing I know for sure, is that Hafsah Faizal sure knows how to punch me in the heart.

The book was told in third person, with Nasir and Zafira’s POV. As you know, I love books with multiple point of views because we get to understand the book and the characters more. Also, the romance here was not the most important thing, but it gets to the point in which it starts to blossom and I lived for those moments! This was a kind of slow burn enemies to lovers, or at least it felt to me like that.

I highly recommend this book! The world is confusing at first, but once you understand what’s going on and how everything works, it is fascinating. The characters were so easy to love and care about. And the plot of the whole story is amazing! We Hunt the Flame, without a doubt, is a promising first book of a series!

Until the next post!

Happy reading 💙
